5acrehouse

August 2007.
Spring has sprung in the middle of winter like it often does. And the first tree to blossom is an old almond tree I rescued from a backyard a few years ago. If we have some decent rain this summer it could be a very fruitful year.

2007 is going to be the first year I can really get producing some serious quantities of produce. The established fruit trees will do what they have been doing for some time and the new trees hopefully will bulk up and start looking sizeable. I have now set up a huge vegie garden (560sqm) which will be a challenge and if successful will supply me with much more then I can possibly eat, but why not !

Daikon Radish
The first ever anything from my new big vegie patch. One of the first things planted and by far the quickest growing. This type of radish is very popular in Japan.
Bucket full of goodies
By mid december the big vegie patch is starting to produce. Dug up about half a bucket of potatoes and picked only the zucchinis and squash that are getting large. Time to start giving things away, sell or over eat !

Purple Top Turnip
This is the first of the turnips. Not many of the seeds I planted popped up though they may later as I should have planted them as a winter crop. Hope to store these and use them as I need them.
Rockmelon
My first rockmelon which looks the part but I did pick it too soon and is not ripe enough. But I have many more still to come so if I end up with too many that should be just about right.

Blackberries
Here's one weed you can eat! I collect blackberries from the block next door and mash and strain them to get the juice, add sugar, heat up and store in jars and make the most delightful jam out of it.
Grapes
My three grape vines are only two summers old and they are producing a modest crop this year. The grapes are small and a tiny bit tangy but not bad for such young uncared for plants.
